Postbox: how to add an add-on manager to the GUI

Thunderbird users know, that the former main Developer of Thunderbird, Scott MacGregor, left Mozilla in 2007. This week, he released a new desktop email client named Postbox, based on the Thunderbird 3 code. The recent versions, when I write this entry, are Postbox 1.0beta7 and Thunderbird 3.0beta1.

Postbox features are described here or commented here. You will find a lot of features you don't see in Thunderbird. But: you will see no add-on manager in Postbox, so you cannot add extensions at the moment to Postbox!

Here is a description, how to add the Thunderbird add-on manager to Postbox's user interface, and how to install extensions, which are compatible with Thunderbird 3, in Postbox.

Warning: This may be dangerous and is at your own risk. I am not responsible for anything, what happened to your PC. If you loose data's, do not come to me and cry, Postbox is beta, me is pre-alpha!

What you need:

• Mr. Tech's Toolkit
• The following code , which you will find in the default install.rdf in the program-installation-path of Postbox, like C:\Program Files\Postbox\extensions\{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}

Steps to add the add-on manager:

1. Install the latest version of Mr. Techs Toolkit in your profile of Thunderbird 2 or 3
2. Open the installation path of this extension in your Thunderbird profile
3. Open the install.rdf of this extension
4. Add the code above to this install.rdf
5. Save an close the install.rdf
6. Copy this whole Thunderbird installation path of this extension
7. Paste it in the profile folder ...\extension of your Postbox-profile (this folder is empty by default)
8. Start Postbox
9. Right-click on the menu-bar, choose "customize toolbar"
10. Drag and drop the buttons "Extensions" and "Restart" to the toolbar
11. Click on button "Extensions"

You now will see nearly the original Thunderbird add-on manager in Postbox with the one add-on Mr. Tech's Toolkit

• Click on "Options"
• Uncheck "Enable add-ons compatibility checking"
• Restart

Test the Postbox add-on manager by installing an extension of your choice. Be carefully and take only extensions, which are allowed by extension author for Thunderbird builds from 3.0b2pre or higher.

I tested it with extension ThreadKey. This extension replaces the in Thunderbird 3 banned shortcut "G" of old Thunderbird 1, 1.5, and 2 (see bug#275871).

But keep this in mind: there is no guarantee, that Thunderbird 3 compatible extension will work (properly) in Postbox 1. In the case of Mr. Tech's Toolkit, some buttons don't react. And do not add Thunderbird 3 themes to Postbox, this does not work or can destroy your Postbox installation!

Wenn Opas grooven

Also ich bezeichne jetzt mal die Angehörigen meiner Generation als Opas und Omas, und ich springe jetzt mal um etwas mehr als eine Generation zurück in jene Zeit, als unsereiner in schummrigen Discos stundenlang abtanzte. Geld, unsere Stars live zu sehen oder zu hören, hatten wir damals nicht, und oft gab es keine Platten, sonder lediglich einen Radio-Mitschnitt auf Kassette (heißt mit den Mitteln von heute "Illegaler Download").

Zurück nach 2009. Der Belgische Handy-Provider Proximus hatte irgend etwas zu feiern und lud zu einem Konzert in den Sportpaleis von Antwerpen ein, in die Mega-Disco Proximusfever mit Gloria Gaynor, Sister Sledge, Boney M, Weather Girls, John Leee (Imagination), Eruption und The Gibson Brothers.

Tja, da waren sie, knapp 15.000 (fast ausverkauft) von meiner Generation, ohne Kinder, einige mit ihren Enkeln, zum swingen und grooven. The Gibson Brothers und Gloria Gaynor haben noch Saft und Kraft, sie haben uns von den Stühlen gerissen, sie haben überlebt.
Die Weather Girls, die ich kannte, gibt's nicht mehr.
Ein Stich ins Herz war Boney M, ein kranker, abgemagerter, alter Mann, der ohne Jacke über die Bühne schlich; es ist zum Heulen, das jemand noch so sein Geld verdienen muss.
Der Rest war vergangene Herrlichkeit.

Für 37 Euro und 2x eineinhalb Stunden Autofahrt gab es gestern im Gesamtpaket, was ich mir damals einzeln nicht leisten konnte. Für Gloria Gaynor und die Gibson Brothers hat es sich gelohnt.

Google temmen

Het moet eerst iets gebeuren, dat je maar weer eens goed over het Internet nadenkt, wat je daar allemaal aan het doen bent. Nee, deze keer bedoel ik niet Downadup, die snelle worm, die zorgeloze netwerk-administrators weer een lesje geleerd heeft. Deze keer bedoel ik de naast Microsoft andere Global Player in het WorldWideWeb: Google. Die heeft namelijk zaterdag middag vanaf 15:30h onze tijd een black-out gehad (broken noem je dat in een vakterm): een kleine uur werden alle zoekresultaten gewoon als Phishing gemarkeerd en het doorklikken geblokt. Dus Google lag plat, wereldwijde, 100%. Wat ben je toch afhankelijk van een spellingfoutje, en een Google Vice-president moest zijn excuus aanbieden. Eigenlijk alleen maar een grap om hartelijk te lachen...

Maar: Google heeft laatste week (27-januari) stiekem zijn privacy regeling aangepast, en zij mogen nu protocolleren, hoe lang je welke Google-dienst gebruikt. Dit is het prijskaartje, als je van al die prachtige (gratis) Google-diensten gebruik maakt, zo als Chrome, Search the Web, Maps, Nieuws, Agenda, Documenten, Gmail, Picasa, YouTube (!), enz. enz.

Maar wil je dat betalen? Wil je, dat iemand onbekends met enkele muisklikken een beter profiel van je krijgt dan een psycholoog na een jaar zittingen? Nee? Dan is er help voor je:

Dit is een extensie voor Firefox-Browser, en het belangrijkste is, dat je het verzenden van informatie over je persoonlijk surfgedrag kan blokken (door het Google cookie anoniem te maken).

Maar er zijn nog andere nuttige instellingen, in totaal zijn er +/- 50 aanpassingen van de Google diensten mogelijk zo als

• advertenties onderdrukken
• andere zoekmachines in de resultatenlijst toevoegen,
• standard switchen van http naar https
• onderbinden van click tracking
• verbetering van user interface
• enz.

Klik op het rechte knopje om meer te ervaren, maar je moet er wel Firefox voor hebben (linker knopje) en afscheid nemen van Internet Explorer, als je Google diensten gebruikt. Zie ook de flash-animatie hier.
